ANAYO EZUGWU examines the crisis rocking the Labour Party in Edo State over the choice of deputy governorship candidate and the continued rejection of Olumide Akpata as the gubernatorial standard bearer by some members of the party in the state

Ahead of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, the unabated crisis in one of the major opposition parties, the Labour Party, has continued to degenerate as some members of the party have rejected the list of governorship and deputy governorship candidates published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The electoral umpire published Oluyinka Faith Alufohai rather than Asamah Yusuf Kadiri (SAN) as running mate to Olumide Akpata. This singular action has intensified the infighting within the party. It would be recalled that Akpata had on April 19, dropped Alufohai as his running mate and picked Kadiri as the deputy governorship candidate of the party.

However, it is not clear whether the party notified INEC of the change before the electoral umpire published the final list. But the state chairman of the party, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, has assured party members and supporters that this is simply a technical error.
