Sheffield-based record label and shop Black Beacon Sound has welcomed six independent musicians and producers affiliated with its past catalogue of releases, live events, radio, and local networks, celebrating cutting edge music and independent culture, in order to raise awareness of and funds for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). The organisation provides medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare. Their teams are made up of tens of thousands of health professionals, logistic and administrative staff – most of them hired locally. And their actions are guided by medical ethics, and the principles of impartiality, independence and neutrality. Specifically, this release will donate 100% of all proceeds in support of the emergency operations in Gaza and the West Bank.

The collection will be released as an EP titled SAMPLER: PART 2 on the 26th of April, 2024. Inspired by the sampler format, this compilation illuminates a range of styles, emphasising the symbiotic nature and broad appeal of dance and electronic music. The sampler aims to be readily shared, ensuring accessibility, to maximise financial aid for the charity during these crucial times.

This premiere spotlights the second track, Jake Mehew’s ‘No Space For Colonialism’, a title befitting of the cause for which the record is being released. Jake Mehew, a versatile A/V artist from Leeds, is known for pushing the limits in mixed-media expression. His musical endeavours centre around blending techno, modular improvisation, and soundscape design. Noteworthy achievements include earning distinction through the Richie Hawtin PhD scholarship at the University of Huddersfield, participating in the esteemed Sage Gateshead Summer Residency, and securing performances at events such as Houghton Festival and the Berlin Modular Society.

His latest offering boldly showcases his remarkable expertise, featuring a powerful, modular-led roombuster. ‘No Space For Colonialism’ offers high-octane beeps of modular synths, infectious sawtooth stabs, dizzying echoes and a dreamy double-whammy of both a bass-heavy four-on-the-floor and a shuffling breakbeat rhythm. The track beckons the listener to a smokey blacklist room to meet their fate on the dancefloor. Listen to it early, exclusively via PLAYY Mag:
