No. of Paragraph 23

WASHINGTON โ€” The House and Senate Ag Committees on Wednesday, May 1, released their respective frameworks for a new farm bill, pleasing farm groups and legislators who had become anxious about the status of the massive legislation.

Both chambers released documents explaining their priorities for the 12 chapters of the bill, which outlines nutrition spending and ag programs for five years. Congress gave the current farm bill, passed in 2018, a one-year extension after failing to pass a new bill by the deadline of Sept. 30, 2023.

The Senate version is called the "Rural Prosperity and Food Security Act," while the House release did not indicate a name. Chairs of both chambers tout their proposals' bipartisan input and extensively researched ideas.

"This is a serious proposal that reflects bipartisan priorities to keep farmers farming, families fed, and rural communities strong," said Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, who chairs the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, in a statement. "The foundation of every successful farm bill is built on holding together the broad, bipartisan coalition of farmers, rural communities, nutrition and hunger advocates, researchers, conservationists, and the climate community. This is that bill, and I welcome my Republican colleagues to take it seriously and rejoin us at the negotiating table so we can finish our work by the end of the year. Farmers, families, and rural communities cannot wait any longer on the 2024 Farm Bill."
